Joe blogs us through the epic 25-20 13B win against Nottingham High.

Under 13B Rugby at Nottingham School

It was our first match of the season. It was a cold and wet day. However, the under 13B’s played as if it was the end of the season. We started the match very promisingly, with an early couple of tries. We were winning every loose ball and turning the ball over at every ruck. After one more breakaway try, to make it 3-0, Nottingham started to get into the game. There was a scrum on the halfway line, and the opposition kept the ball. At this point, they gave it to a boy who was extremely fast and agile. This meant that the whole of our defensive line could not get a hold of him before he made the score 3-1. This was minutes before half-time.

After our half-time talk, we went out bursting with energy. However, that one boy was all fired up and he went and scored two more tries from the exact same position (from the scrum). This made the score 3-3. This is when many of us were becoming quite nervous; and it was those nerves that led to Nottingham’s fourth try, and that same boy’s fourth try. Many teams would have just given up at this point, however we gritted our teeth and pushed on. This led to some brilliant play and a well-deserved and well-worked equalising try. There were only about 5 minutes to go, and we dug deeper than we ever thought possible. This resulted in a brilliant run down the wing and a fantastic finish. This made it 5-4 to Stamford, and that’s how it finished. We were exhilarated and overcome with joy at the end, and many of us were glad the game was finally over. It was a great first win for the team, and we hope to build on it in our next match.
